Fun in the Sun at the JT Hughes Group Shrewsbury Sprint Triathlon & Quadrathlon!

Shrewsbury Sprint Triathlon & Quadrathlon!

The JT Hughes Group was proud to resume our role as main sponsor of the  Shrewsbury Sprint Triathlon & Quadrathlon. After seven years of sold-out fields, 2018’s edition - held on Sunday, 2nd September – was the most eagerly anticipated holding of the event yet. And it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Over 370 entrants and an estimated 600 spectators descended on the County Showground for the men’s and women’s races, which were won this year by Tom Garbett and Rachel Parker. The triathlon event combined a 500m swim down the River Severn with an undulating 23km country bike course, finishing with a 5km run on mixed surfaces.

The quadrathlon adds a 4km downstream and back kayak section which extends down to Frankwell, before paddling back up to the Showground. This part of the race was sandwiched in between the swim and the cycle leg. The four discipline format is only used at a few events in the UK, giving the JT Hughes Group Shrewsbury Sprint Triathlon & Quadrathlon extra appeal to competitors from far and wide.

The JT Hughes Group Shrewsbury Sprint Triathlon & Quadrathlon has always been recognised as a favourite with both beginners and experienced triathletes, as represented by the different abilities in this year’s field.

Participants and spectators were blessed with perfect late summer weather, and the low rainfall throughout the season meant that there was little current on the river, making for ideal swimming conditions.

We want to congratulate the Shrewsbury Triathlon Club (SYTri) for putting on a magnificent event – there were plenty of activities for families in attendance to get involved with on the day. The finale inside the County Showground, which saw competitors complete the 5km run, gave spectators the chance to see the action at close quarters and lend their vocal support.

In addition to support from us at JT Hughes, the SYTri is helped by a valuable team of volunteers. Speaking to local newspaper the Shropshire Star, organiser Sam Mountain had the following words: “We couldn’t do it without the time that our members give up to make sure it is held successfully and safely.”

Paul Tench, Director of Sales and Marketing at JT Hughes, said: “We were delighted to offer our backing to this essential date in the Shropshire summer calendar. The JT Hughes Group Shrewsbury Sprint Triathlon & Quadrathlon combines the competitive edge of one of sport’s toughest disciplines with a vibrant community spirit. We look forward to continuing our commitment to this fantastic event.”

The JT Hughes Group Shrewsbury Sprint Triathlon & Quadrathlon keeps going from strength to strength. The event has attracted participants from all over the country and around the world – from as far afield as Australia. Roll on next year, when we hope the sun comes out to play again!
